Over the last six months, I’ve spent hundreds of hours searching for and looking at possible new spaces to move the shop to. The result is that I’ve not been able to find anything that didn’t require us to double our current sales (or more!) to pay the increased rent. Despite the large amount of available retail space in Fort Collins, the landlords would rather have their buildings sit empty for years rather then rent them out for less than an exorbitant rate.
We’ve all seen the high percentage of small businesses that go under in the first five years. A really good way to go out of business is to move into a space where the rent is too high. You end up talking money that should have been spent on new inventory and using it to pay the rent. Less stuff on the shelves means you make less money and spiral down and down.
The advantages of staying put are just too good to ignore. Currently, we’re profitable and growing. Also, our current landlord has offered us a great deal to stay. In short, the advantages of staying outweigh the advantages of moving.
