It Pays to DM at The Haunted Game Cafe

Josh Cooper, our veteran Dungeon Master, has been collecting $5 gift tokens for a while now. Today, he cashed them in for a box of Innistrad!

Volunteers who run paid events for The Haunted Game Cafe get compensated with Gift Tokens. It’s the least we can do for all the people that are so great about volunteering their time and energy to share the game that they love.

Congrats, Josh!

Midnight Release of Innistrad

To celebrate the release of Innistrad, The Haunted Game Cafe will be open Thursday the 29th until 1am. We start selling cards at Midnight.

You can also play in our Mini-Master’s Event for only $7.

Innistrad League

Starting Tuesday, November 15th, The Haunted Game Cafe will begin the second season of the Magic League Night for Innistrad. The format will be Sealed Deck. The first time you play in the league, you’ll purchase six packs of boosters for $30.  Each week after, players must buy one additional pack for $6. All costs beyond the cost of the packs goes to prize support.

The League will run for 6 weeks and then re-set and run for another 6 weeks.  The cost associated with the League will be due for each League.  If you wish to participate in both, then the costs will apply for both of them. The first League will run from October 4th, 2011 through November 8, 2011 and the second League will run from November 15, 2011 through December 19, 2011.

Prizes will be awarded at the end of the evening to the top finishers. In addition, players receive points towards the grand prizes that are given out at the end of each six-week league.  Players receive one point for participating in each weekly event and one point for each person who finished below them in the standings at each weekly event. For example, if you finished first in a sixteen player event, you would receive 16 points (1 for playing and 15 for each participant you finished above in the standings.)

Players may only play cards opened in their event booster packs. We’ll be asking players to keep a checklist of all cards opened.

The checklist is available at Wizards website.

Weekly prizes will be based on the number of participants.

End of League Prizes will be based on the number of players that payed into the prize pool.

Innistrad League FAQ:

  • No trading of cards is allowed. Players must use only cards they opened in boosters purchased for the league.
  • Players may trade away or sell cards from their pool, but any cards removed from their pool must be crossed off their checklist. You may not add cards to your pool by trading.
  • Sealed decks must contain a minimum of forty cards. There is no maximum deck size; however, you must be able to shuffle your deck with no assistance. There is no maximum number of duplicate cards allowed in the deck.  (i.e. If you draw 5 of the same card in your Booster Packs, you can play with all five in your deck)
  • We will not be using the special Innistrad League rules.
  • League events happen only on Tuesday evenings. There is no independent matches.
  • You may alter your deck between each game and match. A match consists of the best of 3 games between two players.
  • If you miss a week, you are not required to buy the pack you missed, but you may if you wish. However, whatever week you start, you must begin with a sealed pool of 6 packs.

Dreadfleet

Games Workshop has announced a new boxed game similar to the Space Hulk game they did a while back. This time it’s Man-O-War that’s getting the fancy treatment.

From Games Workshop:

Dreadfleet is a boxed game for two (or more) players that includes everything you need to make war on the turbulent seas of the Warhammer world. At your command are two fleets of ships – the Dreadfleet led by the Vampire Count Noctilus, aboard his gargantuan sea-hulk the Bloody Reaver; and the Grand Alliance commanded by the Pirate Captain Jaego Roth, who recently stole the Heldenhammer – the pride of the Imperial Fleet, and one of the largest galleons to ever sail the high seas.

As your ships engage in furious battle, it’s down to you, the fleet captain, to make important split-second decisions. Do you bring all guns to bear on the closest enemy warship, or do you sail into position for a furious broadside? What happens when the warship catches fire, or worse, the powder kegs ignite? Exactly how much punishment can your warship take before it sinks without a trace? Are those Undead seagulls or flying piranha fish? And, when all else fails, do you have the courage to ram your foe, board their ship, and engage them in a duel to the death?

We’ll be receiving a limited number of these games, so be sure to place your order soon.

Extra Life Charity – 24 Hour Game Marathon!

Extra Life is an annual 24-hour game marathon that raises money to help kids at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. It’s never been this much fun to do this much good.

This year’s event begins at 8 a.m. on Oct. 15, 2011. Each participant is asked to raise money by recruiting at least four sponsors to give $1 for each hour of the marathon (that’s just $24 per sponsor).

The event will be held here at the Cafe. We’ll be playing board games from our Open Game Library as well as games brought by our players.  There will be free coffee for all participants. In addition, everyone who plays games at the cafe that day will be asked to make a donation to the Extra Life Charity.

If you can’t play the full 24 hours on Oct. 15 that’s OK. You can make up the time later, or even get ahead by playing some of your 24 hours BEFORE the event. The time played isn’t important. The important thing is to make the commitment to help local children get better. All the money you raise will stay at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital near you.

I want to DONATE

Go to the Haunted Game Cafe Team page on the Extra Life web site.  Choose  one of the participants and then click the “Support This Participant” button on their page. Donations can only be made to individuals, but the total each participant raises goes toward our team goal.

I want to PLAY

Go to the Extra Life web page and create an account. Choose The Haunted Game Cafe as your team. We’re asking each participant to raise $100.
