2020 Gift Guide for Those New to Table Top Gaming

by The Haunted Game Cafe on November 13, 2020

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Tabletop Gaming!

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the many many options available? Good news: we have some suggestions of where to begin your adventure! After each title we’ve included its {category} so that if you especially like a game, you’ll know what to ask about when continuing your gaming experience.

Ticket to Ride Board Game

Ticket to Ride {Set Collection} - Players collect cards to expand their railway routes in North America while aiming to complete goal cards and create the longest route.

Castle Panic {Co-op} - Castle Panic is a cooperative, light strategy game for 1 to 6 players ages 10 and up. Players must work together to defend their castle, in the center of the board, from monsters that attack out of the forest at the edges of the board.

Kingdomino {Tile Placement} -  Players select and place double-sided tiles (like Dominos) onto their board in order to build the most valuable kingdom.

Pandemic {Co-op} - Players work together to save the world from outbreaks of diseases by moving their pawns around a simplified world map. A deck of cards randomizes where diseases spring up and where things get worse. (A timely theme for a classic, ever-popular game.)

Forbidden Island Game

Forbidden Island {Co-op} - Players are adventurers trapped on an island who are trying to find buried treasure and escape the island before it sinks beneath them! They must work together to keep the island afloat while collecting the necessary treasure components. A great game for adults that many kids (8+) can play, too!

Patchwork Game

Pathwork {2-player} - In Patchwork, two players compete to build the most aesthetic (and high-scoring) patchwork quilt on a personal 9x9 game board. Utilizing fun-shaped tiles, this brilliant game of spatial awareness and planning ahead is one of the bestselling 2-player board games of all time.

Sushi Go Party

Sushi Go/Sushi Go Party {Drafting} - In this straightforward game of "pick and pass", players examine a hand of cards, choose the one they want to play for points, and then pass the rest of the cards to the next player to choose from. Since all players select cards simultaneously, this game works great for larger groups.

7 Wonders Board Game

7 Wonders {Drafting} - In this card-drafting game, players collect cards to build their civilization by managing resources and planning ahead. After three Ages (rounds), the game ends, and the player with the most victory points wins.

Splendor Board Game

Splendor {Set Collection} - Splendor is a game of gem-collecting and card development. Players are merchants of the Renaissance trying to buy gem mines, means of transportation, shops—all in order to acquire the most prestige points.

The Crew Quest for Planet Nine

The Crew: Quest for Planet Nine {Co-op, Trick Taking} - Using classic family trick-taking rules (like Hearts), this cooperative game is fun, easy-to-learn strategy for anyone! The players set out as astronauts on an uncertain space adventure, but things keep going wrong on the ship. To fix them, each player must successfully take exactly the right card at exactly the right time!

Social Deduction Games

The Resistance/Coup/Werewolf/Bang! {Social Deduction} - In these social deduction games, players try to guess each other’s role(s) and/or team. Similar to the popular video game Among Us - only without the technology.

Betrayal at House on the Hill

Betrayal at House on the Hill {Traitor} - Three to six players build their own haunted house room by room, tile by tile, creating a new thrilling game board every time. At some point, one of the characters will betray the rest of the party, and the innocent members of the party will need to defeat the traitor in their midst before it’s too late!

Raptor {Asymmetric, 2-player} - DINOSAURS! VS SCIENTISTS. Use cards and actions to outwit your opponent and either flee into the forest or capture the dinosaurs.
