The Color Out of Space Adventure (Shadowdark)

For generations, your family has lived on the empire’s Arctic frontier. Life is simple. Some hunt. Some fish. Some seek nature’s solitude.

Recently, a party of prospectors from the capital discovered rich gold deposits in the nearest mountains. After the success of the first few digs, it became abundantly clear that your remote village was about to become a boomtown.

Citizens from the vast reaches of the empire now flock here, eager to wield their mining picks and find their share of the fortune. Then one night, a glowing meteorite strikes the mountain mine like several ships laden with blasting powder all detonating at once! Not a single soul can express the nauseating hideousness of the alien colour now pulsating from its depths. When the brief light of the Arctic day finally breaks, word spreads of many missing miners who failed to return on schedule. Your village elder quickly calls an emergency meeting of all imperial citizens. There, he seeks volunteers to mount a rescue expedition; his reading of the omens speaks of danger unlike anything seen before. The mission is clear: investigate the crash site at the mine, rescue any survivors you may find, and dispatch whatever evil there may be.

Whether motivated by your love of kin and country, your oaths and duty to the emperor, or your lucrative interests in the gold mine, you and others of similar ilk raise your hands. After gathering what gear you can muster, sled teams form and set out for the mountain mine.
